I was six years old when my grandmother taught me how to make tortillas – my first cooking lesson. She was from Chihuahua, Mexico, and spoke no English. Everyday after school, I ran to her kitchen, my head filled with the rich aromas of authentic Mexican cooking. Together, we shaped small balls of soft dough. She showed me how to roll each one out into a perfect circle – up, down, turn – with an old wooden rolling pin. She grew her own herbs, blended cure-all teas… and ignited in me an insatiable appetite for cooking that has lasted all my life.

I have studied cooking all over the world – in Milan, Paris, Oaxaca, the Sonoma Valley – but it all started with a simple recipe and my grandmother’s willingness to teach. Now, I teach my own granddaughter, Rylee Mac, to cook.
